Abstract

Plastic waste is a major cause of environmental pollution in Indonesia that has not been completely resolved. The high usage of synthetic plastic from crude oil is difficult to degrade naturally and has a negative impact on the environment and the health of living organisms. As an alternative in reducing plastic waste, easily degradable plastic or bioplastics can be produced. Liquid waste from the tofu industry (whey) can be utilized as a raw material for bioplastic production because it contains cellulose, with the addition of several additives that affect the rate of biodegradation. This study aims to utilize tofu whey waste to produce bioplastics and analyze the effect of these additives on the biodegradation capability of the resulting bioplastics. Bioplastic synthesis was conducted with variations of glycerol plasticizers, chitosan, palm oil, and gum arabic, followed by biodegradation testing using the Soil Burial Test method. The percentage of degradation and visual observation of physical changes in the plastic were calculated on days 5, 10, and 15. The results showed that tofu liquid waste has potential as a material for making bioplastics with the addition of glycerol, chitosan, palm oil, and gum arabic plasticizers which have the ability to decompose completely within 15 days. The addition of additives affects the rate of degradation of bioplastics. Bioplastics with the addition of glycerol and chitosan decompose faster than bioplastics with the addition of glycerol, palm oil, and gum arabic. The optimum condition was obtained at a concentration of glycerol of 10 ml, palm oil 15 ml, and Arabic gum 45 ml which showed degradation result of 72,9% on day 10, and had a tensile strength value of 23,459 MPa.
