Abstract

One alternative to reduce heavy metal content in industrial waste is to use compounds synthesized from certain materials to absorb these heavy metals, as in this study, namely by using silica from Mount Bromo volcanic ash. The purpose of this study was to determine the best conditions for the binding ability of Cu(II) metal with silica from Mount Bromo volcanic ash which includes the mass of adsorbent and adsorption time of silica on Cu(II) metal, to find out the appropriate equation model between Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms on the adsorption of Cu(II) metal with silica from Mount Bromo volcanic ash. This research was conducted in four stages, namely silica extraction, silica synthesis, silica activation and Cu(II) metal adsorption using electroplating waste with a variable mass of silica 0.5 gram; 1 grams; 1.5 grams; 2 grams and 2.5 grams and adsorption time variable 40 minutes; 60 minutes; 80 minutes; 100 minutes and 120 minutes. The resulting silica has a SiO2 content of 41.1%, where the electroplating waste concentration of 187 mg/L volume of 10 mL with a mass of 2 grams of silica for 80 minutes can adsorb Cu(II) metal up to 99.0481% using the Langmuir adsorption isotherm equation and obtains a linear equation y = 1.635x – 0.021 with an R2 value of 0.9701. The adsorption power of silica on Cu(II) metal increases with increasing mass of the adsorbent and the length of adsorption time until it reaches its optimum point, after reaching the optimum point the mass of the adsorbent and adsorption time have no significant effect.
