Abstract

The establishment of a magnesium carbonate factory from dolomite using the aeration hydration process is planned for a production capacity of 50,000 tons/year, which is expected to reduce unemployment and improve living standards and increase foreign exchange. Magnesium carbonate is a chemical compound formed by the reaction between magnesium and carbon dioxide gas. Magnesium carbonate is one of the materials needed by the industrial world in Indonesia, such as the paint, paper, and pharmaceutical industries. The raw material used is dolomite obtained from PT. Magnesium Gosari International. Dolomite undergoes a calcination process in a Rotary Kiln at an operating temperature of 900ºC with a pressure of 1 atm to form MgO.CaO from the decomposition of dolomite, then cooled using a Cooling Screw Conveyor to 70ºC. Followed by the hydration process in the Hydrator Reactor at an operating temperature of 60ºC and a pressure of 1 atm to form a solution (Ca(OH)₂Mg(OH)₂). After that, the filtrate and the remaining solids were separated using a filter press. Then to the Carbonator to be reacted with carbon dioxide gas with operating temperature conditions of 60ºC pressure 1 atm with a conversion percent of 99.85% Mg(HCO₃)₂. The results obtained enter the heating reactor with operating temperature conditions of 100ºC and pressure of 1 atm so that Mg(HCO₃)₂ decomposes into MgCO₃. Then it is cooled using a Cooling Screw Conveyor to 35ºC. Then go to the Ball Mill to be uniformed into 100 mesh. then MgCO₃ or magnesium carbonate is stored in a magnesium carbonate silo and then packaged.
