Abstract

Lately, the use of two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles is increasing over time. The use of these vehicles causes an increase in the number of high fuel requirements but due to the use of fossil fuels, which are not environmentally friendly, it causes air pollution. One of the environmentally friendly fuels is bioethanol, which is ethanol or alcohol compounds obtained through the fermentation process of foodstuffs containing starch or sugar with the help of microorganisms and is one of the leading bioenergy sources that can reduce pollutant emissions. Therefore, research on the manufacture of bioethanol using hydrolysis and fermentation methods using cassava peel as raw material is carried out as an environmentally friendly fuel solution. Cassava peel contains starch which can be converted into glucose by hydrolysis process using HCl catalyst and then fermented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae microorganisms to produce bioethanol. From this study it was found that the concentration of the catalyst used can affect the levels of bioethanol. The bioethanol content obtained that meets the standards as a fuel mixture is the result of hydrolysis with 26% glucose using a 25% HCl catalyst, the bioethanol content before distillation is 17.11% and after distillation 66.13% on the 10th day of fermentation as the best result. The results of the GC-MS test (Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry) it was found that bioethanol has a wavelength that may indicate the presence of OH- functional groups or hydrogen bonds from bioethanol raw materials.
