Abstract
Laundry waste contains high surfactant (MBAS) and phosphate (PO4), phosphate comes from Sodium Tripoly Phosphate (STPP) which is one of the ingredients in detergents. STPP functions as a builder which is the second important element after surfactants, because of its ability to remove hardness minerals in water so that detergents can work optimally. Excess phosphate in water bodies will result in eutrophication. Eutrophication is an environmental problem that causes plants to grow very quickly compared to normal growth. To overcome this problem, it is necessary to have an alternative treatment and an effective application to treat this waste. One of these processing alternatives is the electro-coagulation method. Electrocoagulation is a waste treatment method by combining electrolysis and coagulation methods. Through the electrolysis process, cations will be produced (at the anode) which will react with water to form hydrate cations. These hydrate cations will bind negatively charged colloids in water and form flocs (coagulation). This will reduce the level of contamination in the water. The electrocoagulation process has proven to be quite effective for the purpose of reducing several types of pollutants, including slaughterhouse wastewater, leachate from waste extraction, and lead ion. In this study, a more in-depth study will be conducted on the treatment of laundry waste using the electrocoagulation method in reducing the concentration of PO4, surfactants, TSS and COD. Keywords: Laundry Waste; electrocoagulation; PO4; surfactants; TSS; COD.
