Abstract
To reduce shell scallops waste and increase the quality value of shells, it can be done by processing it into PCC. PCC is calcium carbonate produced from the high purity precipitation process. This high CaCO3 content makes it used as a filler in chemical industry. Characteristics of PCC belong to micro particles which are easily regulated and homogeneous. The purpose of this study is to make PCC from shells by double decomposition method with the addition of hydrochloric acid and sodium carbonate as reagents. In this research, 100 mesh shells as industrial waste are used as raw material for making PCC. From the results of the analysis of PCC quality requirements based on ISO 3262-2: 1998 obtained levels of more than 90% and pH of 8,5-10. These results indicate that calcium carbonate meets the standards in the industrial field. While from the XRF test results the best calcium carbonate levels reached 99.61 % in 90 minutes operating conditions. And the highest Yield obtained 97.1% on variations of Na2CO3 1.5 M concentrations and operating conditions 60 minutes. Key words: blood cockle shells; caco3; double decomposition; pcc
