Abstract
Fuel oil requirement is increasing along with the increasing of population. However, the increasing of fuel oil demand is not matched by the presence of energy reserves, because the existing petroleum resources come from non-renewable fossil fuels. One solution to overcome this problem is making biofuels from renewable materials, one of which is biodiesel. This study aims to make biodiesel from waste cooking oil with the help of amorphous silica adsorbent from Geothermal Sludge which is solid waste from PLTPB Dieng. The experimental stages consisted of treating amorphous silica at a temperature of 110 C, then the esterification process is carried out. After that, the product of the esterification process are continued with the transesterification process. The transesterification process is carried out by mixing oil and methoxide by time variation (60 mins, 75 mins, 90 mins, 105 mins, 120mins) and temperature variation (50 o C, 90 o o C, 60 o C, 70 o C, 80 o C). From the research it is known that the operating conditions to produce the best quality biodiesel yield at a temperature of 90o C with a reaction time of 120 minutes. The biodiesel yield obtained was 96.25%. The results of ASTM D. 4737 analysis showed a cetane number of 62. The physical properties of the biodiesel produced have met several SNI criteria for biodiesel. Key words : Amorphous Silica, Biodiesel, Esterification, Transesterification, waste cooking oil.
