Abstract
A Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) plant, utilizing limestone and carbon dioxide gas through the carbonation process, with a production capacity of 40,000 tons per year, is set to be established in the Industrial Zone of Bangkalan, Madura, East Java. The plant will operate 24 hours a day for 330 days per year. The primary raw material used is sodium hydroxide from limestone. Precipitated calcium carbonate finds applications in various industries such as paint, toothpaste, paper filler, plastics, rubber, pharmaceuticals, and food. The brief description of the PCC plant process involves obtaining limestone from the quarry as the raw material. The PCC production process utilizes carbonation, involving the reaction of the raw material with CO2 to produce PCC. The general process flow includes the extraction of Ca2+ from high-purity limestone with the aid of H2O(l) to form Ca(OH)2(aq) in a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR). Subsequently, CO2(g) is introduced to react with Ca(OH)2(aq) to form PCC in a Plug Flow Bubble Reactor (PFBR), a modified version of the Plug Flow Reactor (PFR). The establishment of this plant brings advantages, not only in terms of profitability through the use of PCC as a filler in various industries but also contributes to meeting market demands. The utility requirements include cooling water at a rate of 40,595.890 kg/h, steam at 449.026 kg/h, and fuel at 185.4 lb/h. Additionally, electricity needs from the national grid (PLN) are estimated at 56,388 kW to fulfill the operational requirements. The establishment of the Precipitated Calcium Carbonate plant, as planned, is anticipated to meet the demands of various industries and contribute to the economic and industrial landscape.
