Abstract
The use of saline soil for agriculture has many obstacles because the salt dissolved in the soil is too high. In addition, salinity that is too extreme will inhibit the absorption of nitrogen (N). Some soil microbes are known to produce N (Nitrogen) available to plants through nitrogen fixation. One of these microbes is the Azotobacter bacteria. This study aims to examine the tolerance limit of salinity for the growth of Azotobacter and how it impacts on available soil nitrogen. The research was conducted from February to July 2023 in the greenhouse and laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, East Java "Veteran" National Development University. This study used a one-factor Complete Random Design (CRD). This study uses NaCl concentrations with the treatments used P0: control treatment; P1: EC 2 mS/cm; P2 : 6 mS/cm; P3 : 10 mS/cm; P4 : 14 mS/cm. Parameters observed included soil available nitrogen, microbial population test, soil pH, soil EC, root wet weight, root length, and corn cob weight. The results showed that the P0 or control salinity treatment gave the best performance compared to other concentrations. Salinity treatment had more influence on soil N availability and plant productivity compared to the presence of Azotobacter microbes. The salinity treatment that can be tolerated for the growth of corn plants is starting at a concentration of 2 mS/cm to 6 mS/cm.
