Abstract
A sodium silicate plant from silica sand and sodium hydroxide using the Brunner-Mond process with a capacity of 80,000 tons/year will be built in the JIIPE Gresik Industrial Area, East Java. This factory operates 24 hours a day and 330 days a year. The raw materials used are 50% sodium hydroxide and 98.77% silica sand. Several uses of sodium silicate in the industrial world include the manufacture of soaps and detergents, pigments and adhesives, metal cleaners, water treatment and paper processing, as well as being used in the industry of catalysts based on silica and silica gel. A brief description of the sodium silicate manufacturing process is that 97.24% silica sand is purified with HCl to remove the existing impurities so that the concentration of silica sand increases to 98.77%. The silica sand is then reacted with sodium hydroxide in a high pressure vessel made of stainless steel and equipped with an agitator and heating jacket. When the two materials have reacted, heat of reaction arises which is endothermic so that a supply of steam is needed to maintain the reactor at an operating temperature of 225oC. After the sodium silicate solution product is formed, the product is flowed to the expander to reduce the product pressure from 23.6 atm to 1 atm. After the pressure is reduced, the temperature of the sodium silicate solution product is lowered to 40oC and a filtering process is carried out between the sodium silicate solution product formed and the unreacted inert SiO2. The filtrate is stored in a storage tank for sodium silicate products with a concentration of 53.46%.
