Abstract
Elephant grass is an annual plant that is upright like sugar cane, has broad, thin leaves, has leaf bones and is easy to reproduce. According to research, elephant grass ash has a silica content of 67.3% by weight of elephant grass ash. Based on this, elephant grass can be used as an alternative raw material for making silica gel. The purpose of this research was to make and determine the effect of pH and aging time in the manufacture of silica xerogel from elephant grass. In this research the sol-gel method was used where the silica content in elephant grass was extracted using NaOH solvent then added HCl to obtain silica gel and then dried until become silica xerogel. The silica xerogel obtained then tested using SEM and XRD. The results of the silica xerogel test obtained silica xerogel with a content of 57.1% and a particle size of 2.791μM at a pH of 8 and an aging time of 21 hours. This shows that silica xerogel with the best conditions was obtained from pH 8 within 21 hours of aging
