Abstract
Ethylene glycol plant from ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide uses a carbonation process with a capacity of 120,000 tons/year is planned to be established in the Manyar area, Gresik Regency, East Java, precisely in the Industrial Area Java Integrated Industrial and Ports Estate (JIIPE). The brief process for making ethylene glycol starts with reacting raw materials ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide in the reactor carbonation. Reaction conversion reached 99%. Products formed in the reactor namely ethylene carbonate. Then the next step is to react with ethylene carbonate with water in a hydrolysis reactor. Reaction conversion reached 99%. The products formed in the hydrolysis reaction are ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol. Next, the 2 compounds are flowed to the distillation tower for processing separation. The top result from the distillation tower is ethylene glycol as a product main with 99% purity. Meanwhile, the product from the bottom of the distillation tower, namely diethylene glycol as a by-product from the factory which has a purity of 98%.
