Abstract

The utilization of waste banana peels in Indonesia is not being fully optimized. The composition of kepok banana peels can be utilized in the production of activated carbon, with cellulose comprising 60-65% of the composition, hemicellulose making up 6-8%, and lignin accounting for 5-10%. Activated carbon is a widely used adsorbent in various industries to eliminate contaminants and pollutants. This study aims to establish the correlation between the quantity of activated carbon and the concentration of Pb(NO3)2 solution in terms of its efficacy in adsorbing lead metal using activated carbon derived from kepok banana peels that have been activated using CaCl2 solution. The research findings reveal that the activated carbon properties of kepok banana peels fulfill the quality requirements set by the National Standardization Agency, including water content and ash content. The produced activated carbon exhibits a moisture content of 4.2% and an ash content of 4%, meeting the SII standard (0258-88) that stipulates a maximum moisture content of 4.5% and a maximum ash content of 2.5%. A relationship is observed between the concentration of Pb(NO3)2 solution and the adsorbent's absorption capacity, with higher concentrations resulting in increased absorption of Pb metals. Furthermore, a relationship is also established between the quantity of activated carbon and its effectiveness in absorption, indicating that a greater mass of activated carbon leads to enhanced absorption efficacy. The effectiveness is influenced by the larger amount of activated carbon that absorbs the Pb metal.
