Abstract
Currently, energy issues are still a significant topic in world conversation. This is because most of the world's main sources of energy still use non-renewable energy derived from fossils. To overcome this, alternative energy is made in the form of green or renewable energy which is usually called bioethanol as a substitute for fuel oil. The majority of Indonesian people only use HVS paper once and then throw it away. There are still many advantages to be gained by using used HVS paper. In this study, used HVS paper was used as a raw material for making bioethanol, which initially hydrolyzed cellulose to become glucose and then followed by a fermentation process using Zymomonas Mobilis. The purpose of this study was to find the best conditions for adding inoculum and the length of time of fermentation in the manufacture of bioethanol. The results of this study indicated that the used HVS paper had a cellulose content of 60.62% and the glucose content resulting from the hydrolysis process was 22.1% (w/w). The ethanol content obtained from the fermentation process can be affected by the addition of inoculum and the length of time fermentation. The addition of an inoculum of 12% (v/v) and a fermentation time of 6 days was the best condition in this study with an ethanol content of 10%. Key words: averrhoa bilimbi; fermentation; waste paper; zymomonas mobilis
