Abstract
Factory of Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate from Soda Ash and Carbon Dioxide with the Carbonation Process Using the Addition of Calcium Carbonate to a capacity of 40,000 tonnes/year will be established in the JIIPE Gresik Industrial Estate, Jalan Raya Manyar KM 11 Manyarejo, Manyar Sido Rukun, Kec. Manyar, Regency Gresik, East Java. This Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate plant uses a system of continuous operation 24 hours a day with 330 working days and 220 employee. This factory uses Soda Ash and Carbon Dioxide raw materials obtained from PT. Petrokima Gresik located in Gresik City, as well Calcium Carbonate obtained from PT. Camco Omya who is in Sidorajo city. The resulting product is 99.19% sodium hydrogen carbonate. Sodium hydrogen carbonate can be used in various industries, One of them is the chemical industry. In the chemical industry, sodium hydrogen carbonate commonly used as a component of detergent manufacture. Sodium hydrogen carbonate can increase the pH and alkalinity of the detergent so that useful for increasing the ability of detergents to clean clothes. The production process used in this sodium hydrogen carbonate factory is the carbonation process with the addition of calcium carbonate. At the preparatory stage raw material, soda ash which is in solid form is dissolved with process water first until the condition is saturated at 85 C in the mixing tank. Additionally, the mixing tank is fed solid calcium carbonate and the recycle of rotary drum vacuum filter so that the resulting mixture will be in the form of a slurry which will be provided to the reactor to be reacted with carbon gas dioxide. In this process, the carbonation reaction between soda ash and carbon dioxide gas occurred at 75 C and 0.68 atm using a flow tank reactor stirred so that continuous production is obtained at a cost of lower equipment maintenance and better quality. In reaction, Carbonation produces sodium hydrogen carbonate.
