Abstract
In the last two years, the trend of fashion cloth ‘berkain’ is being loved by the younger generation of Indonesia, especially those who live in big cities. This trend can indeed be an alternative form of love and preservation of wastra as the nation's cultural heritage by the younger generation. However, the rise of this trend is not matched by adequate education about wastra in the form of literacy. This results in a lack of understanding of the deeper meaning of wastra by the younger generation. Therefore, the design of an encyclopedia book "Wastra Nusantara: Warisan Budaya Indonesia" was made with the aim of being an alternative educational media that is suitable for the younger generation. This design emphasizes the use of interview and FGD methodologies with a sample of young adults as well as expert sources in the field of direct education for the younger generation. This aims to explore the interests of the younger generation themselves regarding wastra education and the information that will be presented in this book later. In addition, observations were also made to understand the existence of existing sources of wastra literacy. This is done to understand what information is contained and what kind of visuals are presented by the book, so that this design can be further developed according to the interests of the younger generation. In the results of the research analysis that has been carried out, it is found that sources of wastra literacy that are visually attractive according to the younger generation are very difficult to find on the market. Interesting visuals here include the layout of the book and the depiction of the text itself which are felt to be less in line with the meaning of wastra for the younger generation. Hence, the use of the word fashionable as a design key, it is felt that it really reflects wastra as a trendy fashion up-to-date and relevant to the younger generation. It is hoped that the design of this encyclopedia book can make a significant contribution to efforts to preserve and educate the nation's next generation of wastra. Even though there are still some shortcomings, it is hoped that the information presented in this book can meet the wastra literacy needs of the younger generation and help them to better understand the true meaning of wastra for Indonesia.
