Abstract
Attempts to revive and promote cultural heritage across the archipelago of Indonesia have been pursued by both the government and also private institutions; in various industries including the educational sector. Continuous and consistent efforts are needed in order to achieve real solid and sustainable results. The Fashion Design Department of Sekolah Tinggi Desain LaSalle Jakarta feels obliged to take part in preserving and promoting local geniuses, particularly the gem of Indonesia’s prized cultural heritage—the traditional textiles—especially among students. A great number of, if not all, the students in Sekolah Tinggi Desain LaSalle Jakarta have been exposed to foreign culture and this is evident in their lifestyles as well as in the designs that they produce. Sekolah Tinggi Desain LaSalle Jakarta, which is affiliated with its principal office in in Montreal, Canada, has been integrating local contents in its syllabi so that it has become an internationally acclaimed educational institution that treasures the cultural heritage of Indonesia. Through this paper—which was written using the phenomenological approach and supported with interviews as well as questionnaires—the writer wishes to share with the design community what Sekolah Tinggi Desain LaSalle Jakarta has done (and plans to be doing) to help preserve Indonesian culture, especially traditional textiles as well as the production techniques.
