Abstract
Acetic acid (CH3COOH) is an organic acid known as a sour taste and aroma in food. Vinegar has the empirical formula C2H4O2. Acetic acid is useful for various industries including the poly terephthalate acid (PTA) plastic bottle industry, the ethyl acetate industry, the textile industry, the acetic acid industry, the rubber thread industry, etc. The need for acetic acid which increases every year causes the establishment of this acetic acid plant to be carried out according to plan, this acetic acid plant is built with a capacity of 96,000 tons/year. Acetic acid with the n-butane oxidation process is produced by reacting liquid butane with oxygen gas in a fixed bed multitube reactor at a temperature of 170 ℃ with a pressure of 55 atm and using a cobalt catalyst. In the reactor, an exothermic reaction occurs so that it requires heat for the reaction process. The product coming out of the reactor is gas which is then cooled in the condenser and the pressure is lowered using an expander to change the product phase from gas to liquid. The liquid formed is then separated using a distillation column based on differences in boiling points. The production result is in the form of liquid acetic acid and the by-product is in the form of formic solution.
