Abstract
Gresik Stainless Steel Industry is one of the largest stainless steel factories in Indonesia since 1996 until now. The production process of the Gresik Stainless Steel Industry is forging, pressing and metal rolling (cold rolled stainless steel). The Gresik Stainless Steel Industry produces products in the form of stainless steel sheets and coils. With a sufficiently large production capacity, it is possible for the production process to produce emissions/by-products that pollute the environment. This study approaches the production process of the Gresik Stainless Steel Industry using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method. This study was conducted using SimaPro 9.3.0.3 software which helps to calculate the environmental impact generated. The scope of the research is gate to gate or during the stainless steel production process, carried out using the midpoint approach of the TRACI 2.1 method. Based on the analysis results, APL has the greatest influence in the stainless steel production process. This is due to the use of nitric acid as an acid for stainless steel. To reduce the environmental impact of the stainless steel production process, 2 alternative programs are planned, 1 alternative program will be applied to the unit with the highest impact, namely APL and 1 alternative program will apply to all units. The alternative program that will be carried out is the application of an evaporator to recover the acid so that it can be reused and to optimize electricity consumption.
