Abstract
One type of beverage product that uses food additives in the form of preservatives and artificial sweeteners is traditional herbal medicine. Traditional herbal medicine consists of beras kencur, kunyit asam, sinom, and temulawak. This traditional herbal medicine containing harmful substances circulating in the community because this was made in home industry without following the right rules. The purpose of this study was to identify the preservative levels of sodium benzoate, cyclamate, and microbial contamination in traditional herbal medicine marketed in Tambaksari district. The design of this research is descriptive, specifically exploring data on the quality of traditional herbal medicine in Tambaksari District by looking at the content of sodium benzoate, cyclamate, and total microbes. From the results it was found that all samples of traditional herbal medicine containing sodium benzoate met the threshold requirement which was 600 mg/kg, 8 of 20 samples of traditional herbal medicine containing cyclamate met the threshold requirement which was 350 mg/kg, and 6 of 10 samples of traditional herbal medicine had the total microbes of 1,19x10^4 - 2,87x10^4 colony/mL which does not met the maximum threshold requirement, which 10^4 colony/mL.
