Abstract

The reduced availability of fossil fuels as an energy source requires humans to create new and renewable energy, such as making biodiesel from plant oils or animal fats. Biodiesel obtained from animal fat or plant oil has a higher price. Making biodiesel at a more affordable price can be done using used cooking oil. This observe goals to decide the kinetics, temperature, and time of transesterification reaction of waste cooking oil using modified CaO catalyst. Used cooking oil is from PT. Onsu Pangan Perkasa outlet “Geprek Bensu” in Rungkut area, Surabaya. The used cooking oil is pretreatment first. The pretreatment used cooking oil was then set at 40, 45, 50, 55, 60°C and mixed with methoxide solution, and then stirred for 20, 30, 40, 50, 60minutes. The biodiesel obtained is then allowed to stand, purified, and separated from the water content in the centrifuge. The results showed that the most extensive conversion was 21.94% at 60°C and 60minutes with a total methyl ester content of 98.16%. The transesterification reaction of biodiesel from waste cooking oil that makes use of a modified CaO catalyst is pseudo first-order.
