Abstract

So far, the number of citrus production in Indonesia has been increasing. The high amount of production and citrus market demand in household and industrial consumption make citrus peel the most common waste that is found in the environment, which contributes to 40-50% of the total fruit weight. Citrus peel is known as a high source of bioactive compounds that are beneficial to the human body, including phenolic compounds, flavonoids, antioxidants, and dietary fiber. In addition, several studies have also stated that citrus peel has functional properties that are beneficial to health. So far, there's no available data review regarding the bioactive compounds and functional properties of different varieties of Indonesian citrus peel. This review related features: 1) comparison of the total phenol content; 2) comparison of antioxidant activity; and 3) functional properties of Indonesian citrus peel in different varieties. Indonesian local citrus peel extracts from various varieties showed promising total phenol content and antioxidant activity. The phytochemical compounds found in local Indonesian citrus peels show various biological properties that are beneficial to humans so that the local Indonesian citrus peel waste can be used as a source of functional food.
