Abstract
The relationship between supervisors and students in a project guidance process for the Visual Communication Design study program has various levels and involves various variables. Appropriate collaboration in the study project guidance process will produce quality works assessed from an academic point of view as well as a commercial point of view. This study aims to find the collaboration format between lecturers and students in the development of digital applications as well as variables that can be measured to determine the most optimal form of collaboration. The study used a mix method approach involving 20 subjects of Visual Communication Design students who worked on a study project in the form of developing digital applications, including interactive multimedia, video games (games), websites, and digital learning media. Digital application development is generally carried out through 4 main stages, namely: 1) design treatment; 2) visual development; 3) programming phases; and 4) publishing phase. The results of this study indicate that the variables involved in the collaborative project of lecturers and students are the intensity of guidance, involvement of both parties in elaborating ideas, developer capacity, product complexity, developer facilities and technology used. The percentage of collaboration between lecturers and students is the main variable that determines the quality of the resulting digital application products.
