Abstract

Despite its phenomenal economic downturn after 2007-2008 global financial crisis, Irish economy recovered relatively quicker than European Union’s on average. Nevertheless, the severity of economic downturn has brought discussion regarding vulnerability of Irish economy to international economic fluctuation, including exploration on roles of foreign enterprises and investments in the country. A focus is given to manufacturing sector because this sector contributes the most to Irish economy in terms of value-added. This paper tries to describe dependency of manufacturing sector in Ireland after 2007-2008 global financial crisis. Dependency theory and its related concepts will be used to analyze various qualitative and quantitative data about Irish economy in general and manufacturing sector in particular. Firstly, we look at the background of foreign enterprises and investments in Ireland, before, during, and after the financial crisis. Then we seek certain characteristics of Irish economy and manufacturing sector after the financial crisis according to the theory. In the end, it can be known that there is still dependency towards foreign enterprises and investments in manufacturing sector, especially towards actors from core countries (e.g. the United States) and at modern manufacturing sub-sector in particular. This left behind indigenous manufacturing enterprises which still operate mostly in traditional manufacturing sector with less value-added compared to the modern one.
