Abstract

The institutional sustainability of farmer groups is a critical factor in supporting farming effectiveness and rural farmers' welfare. However, the Sido Makmur Farmer Group in Pesawahan Village still faces obstacles such as sub-optimal internal coordination and unequal member participation. This study aims to: (1) describe the state of social capital and the level of farmer group sustainability in Pesawahan Village, Porong District, Sidoarjo Regency; and (2) analyze the effect of social capital on the sustainability of farmer groups in the area. This research employed a quantitative approach with the Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling method. The sample consisted of 55 respondents selected proportionally from three farmer groups (Sido Makmur I, Sido Makmur II, and Sido Makmur III) out of a total population of 124 farmers. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistical techniques and Structural Equation Modeling - Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) via SmartPLS 4 software. Social capital as an exogenous variable was measured through three variables (trust, norms, and networks), while the endogenous variable of farmer group sustainability encompassed four dimensions (cohesiveness, commitment, interdependence, and work programs). The results of the descriptive analysis indicated that both the social capital conditions and the level of farmer group sustainability in Pesawahan Village fall into the good category. Hypothesis testing using SEM-PLS proved that social capital has a positive and significant effect on farmer group sustainability. Strong levels of trust, social norms, and interaction networks were shown to strengthen cohesiveness, member commitment, positive interdependence, and the continuity of group work programs. The implications of this study suggest the need to strengthen external networks and improve internal board-member coordination to enhance farmers' welfare and maintain the independent sustainability of farmer group institutions.
