Abstract
Melon production in Tarokan Sub-district, Kediri Regency, has declined in recent years, while melon farming involves high production costs, fluctuating prices, and a waiting period before harvest with no farm receipts, known as the gestation period. These conditions mean farm households may need income sources beyond melon. This study aimed to analyze the income of melon-farming households, analyze their level of income diversification, and identify the factors associated with it in Cengkok Village. The research was conducted from June to July 2026, with the location chosen purposively. The data collected covered income in the most recent planting season, from May to July 2026. A sample of 51 households was drawn from a population of 340 melon farmers using stratified random sampling based on land area. Data were analyzed using household income analysis, the Simpson Index of Diversity or SID, and multiple linear regression in SPSS 25, with age, education, number of dependents, land area, and non-farm work participation as predictors. Average household income in the most recent planting season was IDR 71,789,469, with melon farming accounting for 77.6%, followed by non-melon on-farm income at 12.0%, non-farm income at 6.1%, and off-farm income at 4.3%. Income diversification was moderate with a mean SID of 0.398. The five predictors were jointly significant, with an R² of 0.669. Individually, only land area, which was negatively related, and non-farm work participation, which was positively related, were significant. Diversification is therefore more closely associated with structural factors, namely land holding and access to non-farm work, than with demographic characteristics. These findings come from one planting season in one village and are associational.
