Abstract

Coffee is one of Indonesia's leading plantation commodities that plays an important role in generating foreign exchange, yet Indonesia's position in the world coffee market continues to face pressure from competing countries such as Vietnam and Brazil. This study aims to analyze the comparative and competitive advantage of Indonesian coffee in the international market, as well as the influence of economic factors and distance on its exports using the Gravity Model. The data used are secondary time series data covering 15 years (2009–2024) from BPS, FAO, Bank Indonesia, and ICO, analyzed using the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) method, the Export Competitiveness Index (ECI), and the Gravity Model. The results show that Indonesia's coffee RCA value was above 1 during 2009–2024, meaning that Indonesia has a strong comparative advantage. However, the ECI value tended to be ≤ 1, indicating that competitive advantage has not increased consistently and tends to be weaker compared to Vietnam. The Gravity Model results show that the destination country's GDP has a significant positive effect, while economic distance has a significant negative effect on the value of Indonesian coffee exports. Overall, Indonesia holds a comparative advantage but needs to strengthen its competitive advantage through product innovation, value-added product diversification, distribution efficiency, and strengthening bilateral trade relations. Keywords: Competitiveness, Coffee Export, Revealed Comparative Advantage, Export Competitiveness Index, Gravity Model
