Abstract

Raw water treatment requires the addition of coagulants to reduce turbidity and assist in the sedimentation process of suspended particles. The Krian 1 Water Treatment Plant (IPA) of PERUMDA Delta Tirta Sidoarjo uses Poly Aluminum Chloride (PAC) as a coagulant in the raw water treatment process sourced from the Jagalan River. This research aims to determine the optimum PAC dosage through a jar test and to find out the volume of sludge produced in one liter of raw water using an Imhoff Cone. The methods used include literature study, field observation, interviews, jar test, and measurement of sludge volume using an Imhoff Cone. The data used includes primary data from sludge volume measurements and secondary data from jartest tests during February and March 2024. The observation results show that the average initial turbidity of the raw water in February reached around 123 NTU, with a maximum value of 237 NTU. In March, the average initial turbidity reached around 130 NTU, with a maximum value of 455 NTU. The volume of sludge produced in February ranged from 9–12 mL/L, while in March it ranged from 5–15 mL/L. Observation results show that an increase in the turbidity of raw water tends to be followed by an increase in the volume of sludge formed. Therefore, the determination of the optimum PAC dose needs to be adjusted according to the raw water quality conditions so that the treatment process runs effectively. In addition, the management of the sludge resulting from the treatment needs to be given further attention, one of which is through the application of a Sludge Drying Bed (SDB).
