Abstract

Yeast mud is a solid by-product of bioethanol production that contains considerable amounts of organic carbon (37.2%) and total nitrogen (1.10%), yet its initial C/N ratio of 33.82 substantially exceeds the range of 15–25 mandated by Indonesian National Standard (SNI) No. 261/KPTS/SR.310/M/4/2019 for liquid organic fertilizer (LOF). This study synthesized LOF from yeast mud through a sequential two-stage process comprising solubilization in 1% citric acid followed by aerobic biodegradation via aeration. Variables investigated were yeast mud mass (100–500 g) and aeration duration (4–20 hours) at a constant airflow rate of 1.5 L/min. Yeast mud solubility in 1% citric acid reached 98.70–99.30% within the first four hours through simultaneous hydrolysis of protein, carbohydrate, and lipid fractions alongside mineral complexation by the carboxylate groups of citric acid. Subsequent aeration progressively reduced organic carbon from 37.2% to 18.20–24.60% and increased total nitrogen from 1.10% to 1.52–1.65% by the twentieth hour, thereby decreasing the C/N ratio from 33.82 to 11.03–16.18. All treatment combinations satisfied SNI requirements at 20 hours of aeration, with the most efficient optimum condition identified at 100 g yeast mud mass and 12 hours of aeration, yielding LOF with 24.80% organic carbon, 1.46% total nitrogen, a C/N ratio of 16.99, and pH 6.
