Abstract
Biogas waste is still rarely utilised as a product with high commercial value. Biogas waste contains organic compounds such as cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Consequently, the cellulose present in biogas waste has the potential to serve as a raw material for biochar production. This study aims to produce biochar that complies with SNI (Indonesian National Standards) from biogas waste using the pyrolysis method. The biogas waste used was obtained from PT. Energi Agro Nusantara. In this study, variations in pyrolysis time (30 minutes, 35 minutes, 40 minutes, 45 minutes, 50 minutes) and feedstock weight (250 grams, 300 grams, 350 grams, 400 grams, 450 grams) were tested. The results indicate that variations in pyrolysis time and feedstock weight influence the characteristics of the resulting biochar. Longer pyrolysis times tend to reduce the moisture content and volatile matter content whilst increasing the carbon content of the biochar. The study found the best biochar under conditions of a 50-minute pyrolysis time and a feedstock weight of 250 grams, with a moisture content of 1.3%; ash content of 2.725%; volatile matter content of 39.2%; and carbon content of 56.775%. The biochar produced did not meet SNI 06-3730-1995standards, which stipulate a minimum carbon content of 65%, a maximum volatile matter content of 25%, a maximum ash content of 15%, and a maximum moisture content of 10%.SEM analysis was performed on the best-quality biochar to determine its morphological characteristics, and XRD analysis was conducted to determine its crystal structure. The SEM results showed that the biochar had a dense morphology with a fibrous texture, while the XRD results revealed sharp diffraction peaks at an angle of 2θ of approximately 26–27°, indicating a predominantly crystalline phaseconsisting of CaCO3
