Abstract
Soil contamination caused by waste vehicle oil involves hydrocarbon chemicals that are resistant to degradation and can impair soil quality. One method to assess the extent of hydrocarbon pollution is by measuring Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) levels. This study aimed to determine the efficacy of bioaugmentation using Clostridium sp. and Desulfovibrio sp. bacteria in reducing TPH levels in soil contaminated with waste oil, as well as to analyze changes in pH and temperature during the treatment process. Three anaerobic bioreactor setups were used: treatments with Clostridium sp., Desulfovibrio sp., and a control group without bacterial addition. Each bioreactor contained 800 grams of soil and 80 grams of used oil. The bioremediation process was conducted over 28 days. TPH measurements were taken on days 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28, while pH and temperature were measured daily. The results showed an initial soil TPH level of 4.765% (equivalent to 47,650 mg/kg). After 28 days, the Clostridium sp. treatment reduced TPH from 4.685% to 2.577% (a 45% removal rate), while the Desulfovibrio sp. treatment reduced TPH from 4.578% to 2.747% (a 40% removal rate). The treatment without bacterial addition also showed a TPH reduction of 25%, dropping from 4.648% to 3.485%. pH values decreased across all treatments: from 8.6 to 7.3 for Clostridium sp., from 8.5 to 7.2 for Desulfovibrio sp., and from 8.2 to 7.5 for the control. The temperature remained relatively stable during the bioremediation process, ranging from 28 to 31 degrees Celsius. Based on these results, bioaugmentation with Clostridium sp. demonstrated the best performance in degrading TPH compared to Desulfovibrio sp. and required no additional bacteria.
