Abstract

Soil pollution due to used oil workshop waste is a serious environmental issue because it contains Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) which is toxic and difficult to decompose. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the bioaugmentation method in reducing TPH levels in soil contaminated with used oil, to analyze the influence of different types of bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, and Acinetobacter sp.), and to analyze the effect of contact time on TPH reduction. The research was conducted experimentally by creating replicas of soil contaminated with used workshop oil, consisting of 1 kg of soil and 100 grams of used oil for each reactor. Three reactors were used with the addition of 15 ml of different bacterial inoculums, namely Pseudomonas aeruginosa (R1), Bacillus subtilis (R2), and Acinetobacter sp. (R3). Observations were conducted over 35 days with time intervals of 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days. The parameters measured include TPH content (gravimetric method), pH, temperature, and Total Plate Count (TPC). The research results show that the bioaugmentation method is effective in reducing TPH levels. The Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria exhibited the highest effectiveness with a removal percentage of 50.10% (from 4.87% to 2.43%), followed by Bacillus subtilis at 41.53% (from 4.72% to 2.76%), and Acinetobacter sp. at 34.60% (from 4.80% to 3.14%). The influence of time shows that the most significant decrease in TPH occurred on the 35th day, with the bacterial growth pattern experiencing the adaptation, exponential, stationary, and death phases. The One Way ANOVA statistical test showed a p-value of 0.009 (< 0.05), indicating a significant effect of the observation duration on the reduction of TPH levels. The pH (5.9–7.1) and temperature (28–31°C) conditions during the study were within the optimal range for microbial activity. Thus, bioaugmentation using Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the most effective method for reducing TPH in soil contaminated with used workshop oil waste.
