Abstract

Sludge generated from industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) needs to be properly managed to prevent potential environmental problems. One alternative for sludge utilization is processing it into organic fertilizer through composting. This internship report aims to examine the utilization of sludge obtained from the Sludge Drying Bed (SDB) of the WWTP at PT Garudafood Putra Putri Jaya, Tbk, as organic fertilizer and to observe the characteristics of the resulting material. The method involved observing the sludge processing activities and identifying the characteristics of the organic fertilizer based on color, texture, odor, and moisture condition. The results showed that the processed material had a dark brown color, coarse texture, earthy odor, and dry condition. These characteristics indicate changes in the condition of the sludge following processing and drying in the SDB unit. The utilization of WWTP sludge as a potential organic fertilizer material may provide an alternative approach to industrial sludge management while reducing the amount of waste generated. However, further testing of nutrient content, chemical parameters, and potential contaminants is required to determine its safety and suitability for use as organic fertilizer. Therefore, WWTP sludge processing has the potential to support more sustainable industrial waste management.
