Abstract

The atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) concentration, which has exceeded 420 ppm, calls for efficient and sustainable carbon capture technologies. The microalga Chlorella vulgaris is a promising option, but its performance in photobioreactors is often limited by uneven light distribution and poor mixing. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the number of Round Portable Conical Helix Baffles (PCHB) and photoperiod on specific growth rate, chlorophyll-a, and the removal efficiency of pure CO₂ injected intermittently, and to determine the best combination. The experiment was carried out at laboratory scale in batch mode for seven days, using 4-liter cylindrical reactors with 1, 2, and 3 baffles, photoperiods of 12:12, 14:10, and 16:8 hours light:dark, and one control reactor without baffles. Cell density was counted with a haemocytometer, chlorophyll-a was measured with a spectrophotometer, and inlet and outlet CO₂ concentrations were monitored with a CO₂ meter. The results showed that the number of baffles affected the specific growth rate, while photoperiod did not. Chlorophyll-a was not influenced by either factor, but CO₂ removal efficiency increased as baffles and photoperiod duration increased. The reactor with 3 baffles and a 16:8 photoperiod performed best, with a specific growth rate of 0.2815 day⁻¹, chlorophyll-a of 4.58 mg/m³, and CO₂ removal efficiency of 82.98%, far above the control at 30.93%. In conclusion, the combination of 3 PCHB baffles and a 16:8 photoperiod is the most effective for microalgae-based CO₂ mitigation at laboratory scale.
