Abstract
Groundwater is a widely utilized resource due to its extensive availability, particularly in areas lacking piped water networks; however, its quality is often compromised by the presence of water pollutants. This study aimed to analyze the effects of aeration time, tray hole diameter, and spacing between tray holes on the effectiveness of a combined groundwater treatment process—utilizing aeration, sedimentation, and filtration—to remove iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), as well as to increase Dissolved Oxygen (DO) levels. The research employed a simple reactor setup comprising three integrated units. The aeration process utilized a multiple-tray aerator, with variables including aeration times (10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 minutes), tray hole diameters (6 mm and 8 mm), and hole spacing (12 mm and 16 mm), followed by a Three-Way ANOVA statistical analysis. The results demonstrated that the aeration-sedimentation-filtration combination achieved removal efficiencies of 72.30–93.90% for iron (Fe), 88.33–95.84% for manganese (Mn), and 53.11–63.64% for TDS, while increasing DO levels to a range of 6.03–7.27 mg/L. The highest removal efficiencies for Fe, Mn, and TDS, along with the greatest increase in DO levels, were achieved using a tray hole diameter of 6 mm and a hole spacing of 12 mm. The analysis indicates that the aeration-sedimentation-filtration combination is an effective alternative for groundwater treatment to improve water quality. This research offers a clean water technology solution that is simple and easily implementable by the community.
