Abstract
This study investigates the utilization of slaughterhouse wastewater as an alternative source of electrical energy using Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) technology. MFC is a bioelectrochemical system that converts the chemical energy of organic compounds into electrical energy through microbial metabolic activity. This study aims to evaluate the effects of wastewater substrate concentration and cathode aeration duration on MFC performance, particularly in terms of power generation and organic pollutant removal. The experiment was conducted by varying the wastewater concentration and aeration duration in the cathode compartment. The electrical output was evaluated based on the power density generated, while wastewater treatment performance was assessed by measuring the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) before and after the MFC process. The results showed that increasing the wastewater concentration generally improved electrical output due to the greater availability of organic substrates for microbial metabolism. The highest reported power density was 2207.80125 mW, obtained using 100% (v/v) wastewater with 72 hours of aeration at the 72-hour observation point. In addition, the COD concentration decreased from 1551 mg/L to 358.3 mg/L, corresponding to a removal efficiency of 76.89%. Cathode aeration improved MFC performance by increasing oxygen availability as an electron acceptor. However, the electrical energy generated remained considerably lower than the energy consumed by the aerator, indicating that the system had not yet achieved optimal energy efficiency under the experimental conditions. In conclusion, slaughterhouse wastewater has potential as a substrate for electricity generation through MFC technology while simultaneously reducing organic pollution. Further optimization of reactor operation and aeration energy consumption is required to improve the overall energy efficiency of the system. **Keywords:** slaughterhouse wastewater, Microbial Fuel Cell, electrical energy, power density, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)
