Abstract
Preliminary design of an ethylene oxide plant with a capacity of 60,000 metric tons per year using ethylene and oxygen as raw materials via a direct oxidation process. The plant is planned to be located in Gunungsugih, Cilegon, Banten, taking into account the availability of raw materials, utilities, transportation, markets, and waste management. The establishment of the plant is based on the demand for ethylene oxide in various industries, such as for the production of ethylene glycol, surfactants, detergents, glycol ethers, ethanolamines, and the sterilization of medical equipment, while domestic demand still relies on imports. After comparing the chlorohydrin and ethylene oxidation processes, the ethylene oxidation process was selected because its raw materials are simpler, the waste is easier to handle, and production costs are lower. The production process includes raw material storage and preparation, reaction in the reactor, cooling, absorption, distillation, exhaust gas treatment, and product storage. Ethylene oxide is purified through an absorber and distillation, while unreacted gas can be recycled. Because the reaction is exothermic, the reactor temperature must be controlled, while CO₂-containing gas is treated using a NaOH solution before entering the waste treatment unit. Based on the results of the analysis conducted, the construction of this plant is deemed technically and operationally feasible and has the potential to meet domestic ethylene oxide demand.
