Abstract

The cement production process involves several stages, including raw material grinding and drying in the Raw Mill unit. The performance of this unit is essential for ensuring process efficiency and optimizing energy utilization. This study aims to evaluate the mass and heat balances of the Raw Mill at PT Solusi Bangun Indonesia Tbk, Cilacap Plant, to determine its operational performance and thermal efficiency. The evaluation was conducted using operational data obtained from the Central Control Room (CCR) on June 9, 2025. The mass balance analysis was performed to assess the balance between material inputs and outputs, while the heat balance analysis was used to determine heat losses and thermal efficiency. The results showed that the mass balance was balanced, with total mass flow rates of 503,569.50 kg/h for both the input and output streams. However, the heat balance indicated a discrepancy between the total heat input of 1,127,279.197 kcal/h and the total heat output of 1,055,117.495 kcal/h. The resulting heat loss was 72,161.70194 kcal/h, equivalent to 6.40% of the total heat input. Based on these results, the thermal efficiency of the Raw Mill was calculated to be 93.60%, indicating relatively good thermal performance. The heat loss may be attributed to heat transfer to the surrounding environment through conduction, convection, and radiation, as well as energy carried by dust particles and variations in operational data. Therefore, improvements in heat recovery, duct sealing, and hot gas flow control are recommended to minimize heat losses and improve energy utilization. This evaluation provides insights into the operational performance of the Raw Mill and identifies opportunities for improving thermal efficiency in cement production.
