Abstract
The increasing production of acetylene gas generates large amounts of carbide waste, which may cause environmental problems if not properly managed. This study aims to utilize carbide waste as a raw material for the synthesis and purification of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) through a dissolution–precipitation method. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) was used in the dissolution stage to dissolve calcium compounds, while sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was used in the precipitation stage to recover Ca(OH)₂ with higher purity. The effects of HCl concentration (1.5–3.5 N) and extraction temperature (35–55°C) were investigated to determine the optimum operating conditions. The synthesized products were subsequently characterized using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that increasing the HCl concentration and extraction temperature generally increased the Ca(OH)₂ yield, with the optimum conditions achieved at an HCl concentration of 3.5 N and an extraction temperature of 50°C, resulting in the highest yield of 57.07%. XRF analysis indicated that the calcium content in the final product remained high, reaching 98–99%, demonstrating the effectiveness of the purification process. FTIR characterization confirmed the presence of hydroxyl (–OH) groups, which are characteristic of Ca(OH)₂, at a wavenumber of approximately 3640 cm⁻¹. These findings demonstrate that the dissolution–precipitation method is effective for converting carbide waste into high-purity calcium hydroxide, while supporting waste valorization and environmentally friendly industrial waste management.
