Abstract

N-Butyraldehyde (butyraldehyde) is a propylene-derived chemical compound widely used as an intermediate in the production of n-butanol, 2-ethylhexanol, plasticizers, and polyvinyl butyral (PVB) resins. This compound is extensively utilized in various industries, including plastics, coatings, automotive, and construction. With the increasing demand for n-butyraldehyde, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, the establishment of an n-butyraldehyde plant in Indonesia presents promising opportunities. The plant is planned to be located in the PT Kawasan Industri Kujang Cikampek Industrial Estate, Karawang, West Java, with a production capacity of 55,000 tons per year and is scheduled to commence operations in 2030. The plant will operate for 330 days per year and employ a total workforce of 160 personnel. The production of n-butyraldehyde employs the hydroformylation of propylene with synthesis gas consisting of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H₂), using a water-soluble rhodium complex catalyst with triphenylphosphine trisulfonate (TPPTS) as the ligand. The reaction takes place in a continuously stirred tank reactor at a temperature of 125°C and a pressure of 50 atm. The reactor effluent is subsequently directed to a knock-out drum to separate the gas and liquid phases. The liquid phase is then fed into a decanter to separate the catalyst-containing aqueous phase from the aldehyde mixture, followed by a stripper to remove unreacted propylene. The resulting aldehyde mixture is subsequently fed into a distillation column to obtain n-butyraldehyde as the main product and iso-butyraldehyde as a by-product. The establishment of this n-butyraldehyde plant is expected to support the development of Indonesia's domestic chemical and petrochemical industries by meeting the growing demand for n-butyraldehyde as a raw material for various industrial products. Furthermore, the plant is anticipated to reduce Indonesia's dependence on imported n-butyraldehyde, enhance the added value of propylene as a feedstock, create employment opportunities, and contribute to the growth and competitiveness of the national petrochemical industry.
