Abstract
Zeolite X is a type of faujasite zeolite that is widely utilized in the detergent industry due to its high ion exchange capacity, ordered pore structure, and environmentally friendly properties. This study aims to synthesize Zeolite X using a microwave-assisted sol-gel method with sodium silicate (Na₂SiO₃) and aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)₃) as raw materials, as well as to determine the optimum conditions using the Taguchi method. The variables investigated include the SiO₂/Al₂O₃ molar ratio (1:1–1:1.5), crystallization time (5–25 minutes), and microwave power (120–700 W). The results showed that the optimum conditions were obtained at a SiO₂/Al₂O₃ ratio of 1:1.375, a crystallization time of 5 minutes, and a microwave power of 250 W. The energy consumption was recorded at 0.0208 kWh with a yield of 37.93%. FT-IR characterization results revealed the characteristic absorption bands of Zeolite X at 1011 cm⁻¹ (Si–O–Si), 781 cm⁻¹ (T–O–T), and 565 cm⁻¹ (double six-membered ring D6R), indicating the formation of a stable aluminosilicate framework. The XRD pattern exhibited diffraction peaks characteristic of Zeolite X (FAU) at 2θ = 6.1°–32.6° with a crystallinity of 83.90%, while SEM images showed crystal morphology consisting of irregular octahedral structures with an average size of 8 µm. These results indicate that the microwave-assisted sol-gel method has potential as an economical alternative synthesis method for Zeolite X formation, supporting the development of environmentally friendly materials for phosphate-free detergent industries.
