Abstract
Pineapple peel waste contains carbohydrates and lignocellulosic compounds that have the potential to be utilized as a substrate for biohydrogen production through anaerobic fermentation. This study aimed to produce biohydrogen from pineapple peel waste using Bacillus sp. and to investigate the effects of fermentation time and yeast extract supplementation on biohydrogen production. The experiments were conducted using a pineapple peel substrate with a working volume of 2000 mL, a fermentation temperature of 35°C, a stirring speed of 100 rpm, and anaerobic conditions. Fermentation time was varied from 2 to 10 days, while yeast extract supplementation ranged from 6 to 14 g. The analyses included total gas volume, hydrogen concentration measured using a gas sensor and gas chromatography (GC), and pH changes throughout fermentation. The results showed that the total gas volume ranged from 920 to 6862 mL, while the hydrogen concentration ranged from 0.94% to 18.57% by volume, based on gas sensor measurements. GC analysis indicated a hydrogen concentration of 19.737% by volume at a yeast extract supplementation level of 10 g and a fermentation time of 8 days. These conditions represented the optimum conditions obtained in this study. A comparison of the gas sensor and GC measurements revealed a percentage error of less than 10%, indicating that the gas sensor could serve as an alternative method for measuring hydrogen concentration, although GC provided more precise analytical results. During fermentation, the pH decreased from an initial value of 7 to a minimum of 4.99 on day 10. The addition of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) was presumed to help mitigate the pH decrease through its buffering action. Overall, pineapple peel waste has the potential to be utilized as a substrate for biohydrogen production through anaerobic fermentation using Bacillus sp., with the optimum conditions consisting of 10 g of yeast extract supplementation and a fermentation time of 8 days. Future studies are recommended to measure total dissolved solids (TDS) to monitor changes in dissolved substances during fermentation and to develop a gas separation process to improve the purity and hydrogen concentration of the resulting gas.
