Abstract

Field Work Practice is an experiential learning activity that provides students with the opportunity to apply chemical engineering knowledge directly in an industrial environment. This Field Work Practice was conducted at PT Petrokimia Gresik, particularly in the Factory IA Operations Department, with a focus on the Supporting and By-Products section and the Gunungsari Water Treatment Plant (WTP). The activities aimed to provide an understanding of industrial processes, utility systems, process control, occupational safety, and environmental management, as well as to develop students’ technical and problem-solving skills. The study was conducted through plant tours, direct observations, document studies, and technical evaluations. The Gunungsari WTP supplies treated water to support the utility and production processes at PT Petrokimia Gresik. The water treatment process involves chemical injection, coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. A special study was conducted to evaluate the uprating of the Gunungsari WTP, including the performance of the transfer pump system and the modifications implemented to control algae growth in the treatment area. The evaluation showed that the WTP uprating improved the capacity and reliability of the water treatment system to meet increasing water flow and quality requirements. The installation of a canopy reduced direct sunlight exposure in the flocculation area, while improvements in chlorine distribution contributed to more stable disinfection performance and water quality. Overall, the Field Work Practice provided practical insight into the application of chemical engineering principles in an industrial environment and strengthened students’ analytical, technical communication, and problem-solving abilities.
