Abstract

Laundry industrial wastewater contains surfactants and organic matter at relatively high concentrations, requiring effective treatment before discharge into the environment. This study aimed to analyze the effects of variations in hydraulic retention time (HRT) and starter bacterial types on the biodegradation of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), as well as to determine the best treatment combination using a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) operated in batch mode with an Oxic–Anoxic–Oxic cycle. The study was conducted using six reactors filled with Kaldnes K3 media at a 35% filling ratio, with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas fluorescens used as starter bacteria. The HRT variations were 6 hours (2 hours Oxic A–2 hours Anoxic–2 hours Oxic B), 8 hours (3 hours Oxic A–2 hours Anoxic–3 hours Oxic B), and 10 hours (4 hours Oxic A–2 hours Anoxic–4 hours Oxic B). The initial wastewater concentrations were 1,310.4 mg/L COD and 127.7 mg/L MBAS as an indicator of anionic surfactants/LAS. The results showed that increasing the HRT tended to improve LAS and COD removal. The best performance was obtained in reactor PA10 using Pseudomonas aeruginosa at an HRT of 10 hours, producing a final LAS concentration of 5.58 mg/L with 95.63% removal and a COD concentration of 208 mg/L with 84.13% removal. The General Linear Model (GLM) analysis showed that HRT had a significant effect on LAS concentration (P-value = 0.004), while bacterial type and the interaction between HRT and bacterial type were not statistically significant. For COD, HRT, bacterial type, and their interaction did not show statistically significant effects, although descriptively the 10-hour HRT provided the best removal performance. The PA10 treatment produced effluent that complied with the wastewater quality standards for laundry activities, with an MBAS limit of 10 mg/L and a COD limit of 250 mg/L.
