Abstract
Water hyacinth has great potential as a raw material for Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) because its cellulose content reaches 60.29%. The objective of this study was to produce MCC that meets the standards of the Handbook of Pharmaceutical Excipients through the stages of α-cellulose isolation and hydrolysis with 1.5 M sulfuric acid at 80°C. The isolation process yielded an α-cellulose content of 43.61%, while terbaik hydrolysis conditions were achieved at a solvent volume of 100 mL for 40 minutes. The resulting MCC product was a light cream-colored powder, insoluble in water, with a moisture content of 0.24%, a density of 0.8245 g/cm³, and a pH of 7.31. Morphological analysis via SEM revealed rod-shaped and elongated flat forms with agglomeration in some areas. XRD results confirmed the formation of cellulose II crystals with characteristic peaks at 11.83°, 12.26°, 20.04°, 21.76°, and 34.53°. Based on quantitative analysis, the degree of crystallinity was 68.0870%, the degree of amorphism was 31.9130%, and the average crystal size was 7.22 nm, indicating a stable product structure.
