Abstract
N-Butyraldehyde is an organic compound and a derivative of propylene that serves as a chemical intermediate in the production of n-butanol, 2-ethylhexanol, plasticizers, and polyvinyl butyral (PVB) resin, which are widely used in the plastics, coatings, automotive, and construction industries. Globally, the Asia-Pacific region is the largest market for n-butyraldehyde, driven by rapid industrialization, the expansion of chemical manufacturing capacity, and significant growth in the automotive, construction, and packaging sectors. These conditions present an excellent opportunity to establish the first n-butyraldehyde plant in Indonesia. The n-butyraldehyde plant is scheduled to begin operations in 2030 with a production capacity of 55,000 metric tons per year and will be located in the PT Kawasan Industri Kujang Cikampek Industrial Zone, Karawang, West Java. The plant is designed to operate 330 days per year and will require a total workforce of 160 employees. The n-butyraldehyde synthesis process is carried out through the hydroformylation of propylene with synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen) using a water-soluble catalyst system containing Rh-TPPTS. The reaction is conducted at a temperature of 125°C and a pressure of 50 atm. The economic analysis yielded a Rate on Investment (before taxes) of 31.9%, a Rate on Investment (after taxes) of 23.8%, a Payback Period (PBP) of 4 years and 5 months, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 19.9%, and a Break Even Point (BEP) of 35%.
