Abstract
Industrial slurry from the frozen food industry is a waste stream generated from the Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) process and contains high concentrations of ammonia and organic matter, which may cause environmental pollution if not properly treated. One technology that can be applied is the Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR), which can enhance biofilm growth and improve the degradation efficiency of organic and nitrogen compounds. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of aerobic and anaerobic MBBR systems inoculated with Nitrobacter, Bacillus sp., and indigenous bacteria for ammonia removal from frozen food industry slurry, as well as to analyze the effect of hydraulic retention time on pollutant removal. The experiments were conducted using laboratory-scale MBBR reactors filled with Kaldnes K3 media. The treatments consisted of aerobic and anaerobic reactors, with observations conducted at retention times of 0, 24, 48, and 72 h. The analyzed parameters included ammonia, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD₅), pH, and Dissolved Oxygen (DO). The results showed that all treatments experienced a decrease in pollutant concentrations as the retention time increased. The aerobic reactor inoculated with Nitrobacter exhibited the best performance, achieving final ammonia, COD, and BOD₅ concentrations of 76 mg/L, 5,920 mg/L, and 2,960 mg/L, respectively, at a retention time of 72 h. This treatment also resulted in the highest DO concentration of 7.1 mg/L, while the pH increased to 7.31, indicating favorable conditions for the nitrification process. Meanwhile, the anaerobic reactor inoculated with Bacillus sp. performed better than the reactor with indigenous bacteria; however, its removal efficiency remained lower than that of the aerobic system.
