Abstract

Ethanol produced by conventional distillation reaches only a purity of 95–96% due to the azeotrope phenomenon; therefore, it cannot be further purified into fuelgrade ethanol (≥99.5% according to SNI 7390:2012) through conventional distillation. To address this issue, this study employs an adsorption process using a 3A molecular sieve, which selectively adsorbs water molecules (0.275 nm) while retaining ethanol molecules (0.44 nm). The study aims to produce fuel-grade ethanol by varying the adsorbent weight and reflux ratio, which were optimized using the Differential Expert method. This study was conducted using 300 mL of 96% ethanol with varying filter molecular weights (20–100 grams) and reflux ratios (0.2–1) at a constant temperature of 78°C. The ethanol concentration was measured using an alcoholmeter and confirmed via GC-FID analysis; the data were then analyzed using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on Central Composite Design (CCD) with Design Expert 13 software. The validity of the model was analyzed using ANOVA to ensure the accuracy of the resulting equations. The results show that increasing the adsorbent weight and the reflux ratio consistently increased the ethanol content, with the highest result of 99.9% (alcoholmeter) at a weight of 100 grams and a reflux ratio of 1. The RSM quadratic model yielded R² = 0.9987 and Predicted R² = 0.9833, with optimal conditions at 100 grams and a reflux ratio of 1 mL/s predicting a concentration of 99.862% (desirability = 1.000). These results were verified via GC-FID, which showed an ethanol concentration of 99.5%, consistent with the model’s prediction. The adsorption process using 3A molecular sieve proved effective in producing fuel-grade ethanol in accordance with SNI 7390:2012, with optimal conditions at a feed weight of 100 grams and a reflux ratio of 1 mL/s. The RSM approach using Design Expert proved accurate in modeling and optimizing this process. Further research is recommended to examine adsorbent regeneration, comparisons with other types of molecular sieves, and the effects of variations in operating temperature
