Abstract
This study investigates the synthesis of Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) from carbide waste containing calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) through a carbonation process using a Bubble Column Reactor (BCR). This study aims to investigate the effects of Ca(OH)₂ concentration and carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas flow rate on the CaCO₃ content and to determine the optimum conditions for PCC synthesis using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The experiments were conducted by varying the Ca(OH)₂ concentration from 3–7% and the CO₂ gas flow rate from 3–7 L/min. The carbonation process was carried out for 1 hour. The resulting products were analyzed using titration to determine the CaCO₃ content, as well as Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM–EDX) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) to characterize the product morphology, elemental composition, and crystalline phases. The experimental results showed that increasing the Ca(OH)₂ concentration could increase the CaCO₃ content in the product. The highest experimental CaCO₃ content reached 99.89% at a Ca(OH)₂ concentration of 7% and a CO₂ gas flow rate of 5 L/min. Meanwhile, RSM optimization identified the optimum conditions at a Ca(OH)₂ concentration of 5% and a CO₂ gas flow rate of 5 L/min, with a predicted CaCO₃ content of 98.622%, an Adjusted R² value of 0.9904, and a Predicted R² value of 0.9610. XRD characterization indicated that the product was predominantly composed of the calcite crystalline phase, with minor amounts of vaterite and aragonite. These findings demonstrate that carbide waste has the potential to be utilized as an alternative raw material for producing high-purity PCC as a filler in the paper industry, while also supporting industrial waste reduction and CO₂ utilization through the carbonation process.
