Abstract

Rice bran is an agro-industrial waste containing polysaccharides that have the potential to be converted into glucose through hydrolysis. The utilization of rice bran as a glucose source can increase the added value of agricultural waste while providing a feedstock for various industries. To optimize the hydrolysis process, a kinetic study is required to determine the reaction rate parameters and optimum operating conditions. This study aimed to determine the kinetic parameters of rice bran hydrolysis using 0.5 N hydrochloric acid (HCl) as a catalyst. Hydrolysis was carried out at a rice bran-to-HCl solution ratio of 1:6 (w/v), with reaction temperatures of 55, 65, 75, 85, and 95 °C and reaction times ranging from 80 to 120 min. Glucose concentration was analyzed using a Brix refractometer, while the kinetic parameters were determined through reaction order analysis and the Arrhenius equation. The results showed that glucose concentration increased with increasing hydrolysis temperature and reaction time. The highest glucose concentration of 14.09% (w/v) was obtained at 95 °C after 120 min of hydrolysis. Kinetic analysis indicated that the hydrolysis reaction of glucose from rice bran followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model, with the highest coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.9466. The maximum reaction rate constant was 0.0032 min⁻¹ at 95 °C, and the activation energy was 21.0239 kJ/mol. These kinetic parameters can serve as a basis for the design and scale-up of batch reactors or Continuous Stirred Tank Reactors (CSTRs) for glucose production from rice bran through acid hydrolysis.
